Sixth Form Curriculum
At WHSB, Sixth Form students have the flexibility to study three or four A Level subjects, with four being the recommended number. These subjects are taught over two years, with no AS examinations in Lower Sixth. Students undergo a rigorous Internal Examination in May of Lower Sixth to assess their progress. If deemed in the student’s best interests, as judged by the School in consultation with the student and their family, students who start with four A-level subjects may discontinue one following a formal review.
Details of the subjects offered are provided below, along with the specifications followed and the specific entry criteria.
In addition to A Level studies, all Sixth Form students benefit from a programme of wider education on important issues of relevance (including health, study skills and practical skills for working and domestic life) through assemblies, PSHEE lessons, Form periods and bespoke training events. All Sixth Form students also spend one afternoon each week on activities chosen from a range of options, including sports, creative pursuits, entrepreneurship, academics, and community-based activities. Volunteering in the local community is actively encouraged and facilitated.
For those who wish to further develop their independent learning, students at WHSB have the opportunity to enrol in an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Dissertation and research project in the Summer of their Lower Sixth year. These projects are completed over the course of the Summer holiday and the Autumn Term of Upper Sixth, with weekly support provided to all Upper Sixth students completing EPQs. This comprehensive support system empowers students to take ownership of their learning, fostering a sense of academic independence and responsibility.
At WHSB, students have numerous opportunities to develop teamwork, organisational, and leadership skills. These include our House system, mentoring younger pupils, organising our annual charity activity programme, and participating in our comprehensive co-curricular programme.
