WHSB Annual Geology Conference

We are most grateful to those experienced speakers who recently supported our annual Geology Conference, attended by Geology students in Years 10, 11, and the Sixth Form. The speakers, including a lecturer from Leicester University, and a Mining Geologist working in Industry, addressed a wide range of geology issues, stretching and challenging our students, whilst also sharing ideas about careers in Geology, and latest research.
Old Westcliffians were also invited back to share their university experiences and provide information on university courses and university life. Toby White (Old Westcliffian), a mining consultant, presented "from rocks to rockets", and Dr Marc Reichow, presented ‘Large Igneous Provinces: From Planetary Evolution to Climate Disruptions’. Benedict Heath (Old Westcliffian), reading Earth Sciences at Oxford University, presented on university life, his course and fieldwork.
This event included an afternoon session aimed at our Year 9 pupils, covering interesting aspects of Geology and helping them to consider GCSE Geology as an option. This was presented by Dr Reichow, Mr Marlow, and ably assisted by Benedict Heath.
With thanks to all our speakers who contributed to make our conference a success, and to Mr Marlow and his colleagues in the Geology Department for arranging this exciting opportunity for the students.
