We are delighted to share with you the UK-wide success of three of our pupils this year in the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators. Over 15,000 entries were submitted across the country and the competition is establishing itself as a very prestigious translation competition.

Rafael (Year 11) has won the UK-wide prize for his translation of an excerpt of the German novel Im Westen nichts Neues by Erich Maria Remarque. He will receive his prize when he returns to School in the Sixth Form in September.

Ewan (Year 9) has won the UK-wide prize for his translation of an excerpt of the Spanish novel La liebre mecánica by Galician author Ledicia Costas. The extract described a scene at a skate park and was a tricky one to convey, but Ewan was able to retain the feel of the original in natural English.

Oliver (Year 9) was awarded the UK-wide runner-up prize for his translation of an Italian article linking reading and health. Oliver’s translation read as if it had been originally written in English and stayed true to the meaning of the original text.
